PROJECT NETRA 2022. ODISHA, INDIA

Project Dates: 21-Aug-2022 to 27-Aug-2022

Purpose: Singapore-Odisha Ophthalmology Meet 2022, Run clinics, Follow up on other procedures

Summary: The Vision Mission concluded yet another enriching trip to our friends at Trilochan Netralaya (TN), Orissa, last month in August. Fronting a team comprising of Prof Quah Boon Long, Dr Jayant Iyer, Dr Raghuraj Hegde, Dr Chen Jianping and Mr Mohamed Farook, we embarked on a weeklong trip for the first time since the COVID pandemic started.

May 2021

Purpose: Run Covid Care Centres to help the local community in its time of need

Summary: The Vision Mission (TVM) has been working with Trilochan Netralaya (TN) since 2014. Over this period, we have sponsored and conducted thousands of free surgeries, and done much for the upliftment of eye-care in region surrounding Sambalpur. Now, with Sambalpur, the region, the country and the world at large at the throes of a pandemic, we wish to step up our support to provide Covid Care during this most critical period.

PROJECT NETRA 2019. ODISHA, INDIA

Project Dates: 22-Sept-2019 to 28-Sept-2019

Purpose: Singapore-Odisha Ophthalmology Meet 2019, Free Cataract Surgeries, Cornea, Run clinics, Follow up on other procedures

Summary: The Vision Mission has been working with Trilochan Netralaya since 2014. Over this period, we have sponsored 6000 free surgeries, helped with Clinics, setting up Tele-ophthalmology, Optometry and Refraction Training, Glaucoma Training, Surgical Process Optimization, Laser Training, Oculoplastics, setup of a Diabetic Retinopathy program, and the Continual Medical Education series. In 2019, we will be sponsoring 1000 free cataract surgeries, and also organizing a Singapore-Odisha Ophthalmology Meet 2019.

TVM-Alina Vietnam Project

Project Dates: 25th July to 3rd August, 2019

A TVM-Alina Vision Initiative: to set up a Medical Retina Service and Oculoplastics service in Hanoi, Vietnam

Summary: The Vision Mission travelled to Vietnam this year. TVM is collaborating with Alina Vision to set up a Medical Retina Service and Oculoplastics service at their first hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. The TVM team consisting of Dr. Jason Lee, Dr. Raghuraj Hegde and Dr. Anupama Kiran went over to Hanoi to train local ophthalmologists and other allied para-medical staff. TVM's goals as an organisation has been at capacity building, sustainability and access to sub-speciality eye care in under-served areas in East and South Asia. This finds mutual synergies with Alina Vision and we hope that this project brings value to the local population.

SICS TRAINING 2019: ODISHA, INDIA

Project Dates: 10th to 16th February 2019

A TVM-TN Initiative: Cataract surgery (SICS) training for doctors from Singapore in Sambalpur, Odisha

Summary: The Vision Mission in collaboration with Trilochan Netralaya, Sambhalpur organised a SICS training program for doctors from Singapore. This training program hopes to train surgeons in Singapore to learn an elegant and high quality surgical Procedure under the supervision of a well trained surgeon Dr Shiva Prasad Sahoo who follows good teaching strategies and processes and provides a one to one mentoring in this surgical technique.

PROJECT KHMAT 2018: MEGHALAYA, INDIA

Project Dates: 3rd to 7th October 2018

Purpose: Recce trip to Meghalaya, in North East India, to study the requirements there and how we can be of service.

Summary: We started our inaugural project - Project Khmat - in Shillong in partnership with Bansara Eye Care. Our team visited Shillong from 3rd to 7th October. TVM India founder and Oculoplastic Surgeon, Dr. Raghuraj Hegde and Glaucoma Specialist Dr. Maneesh Singh went down to Meghalaya.

Purpose: Continuing Medical Education in Bhubaneswar, Free Cataract Surgeries, Cornea, Run clinics, Follow up on other procedures

Summary: A team of 3 comprising Dr Anshu Arundhati, Senior Consultant, Singapore National Eye Centre; Dr Kiew Sieh Yean, Senior Resident, Singapore National Eye Centre and Avinash Jayaraman, Founder, The Vision Mission made the trip to Sambalpur. The CME this time was conducted at Mayfair Hotel in Bhubaneswar. We also concieved of a new programme with the Student-Connect Initiative.

PROJECT KORORA 2018: KISII, KENYA

Project Dates: September 2018

Purpose: Recce trip to Kenya, our first in Africa, to study the requirements there and how we can be of service.

Summary: The Vision Mission's first foray into Africa. We had a fruitful site visit this past week to Kisii, Kenya to meet the team there led by Dr Dan Kiage. Our team comprised Dr Jayant Iyer, William Plum and Dr Chitaranjan Mishra. This was primarily a recce trip. We hope to set up Kenya's first DR (diabetic retinopathy) management program there, among other things.

PROJECT TVM YANGON 2018: YANGON, MYANMAR

Project Dates: 31-May-2018 to 2-June-2018

Purpose: Initial scouting and fact finding trip to Yangon, Myanmar.

Summary: Dr Jayant V Iyer and Dr Chen Jianping travelled to Yangon, Myanmar for a 2-day trip. This was primarily a scouting trip to assess the current set up by Dr Zaw Minn Din. The aim was to assess the possibility for future collaboration with regards to
- providing Continued Medical Education sessions for Myanmar Eye trainees and specialists
- providing a regular surgical team to help perform cataract surgeries

PROJECT NETRA 2017. ODISHA, INDIA

Project Dates: 16th to 23rd Dec 2017

Purpose: Continuing Medical Education in Bhubaneswar, Free Cataract Surgeries, Glaucoma, Run clinics, Follow up on other procedures

Summary: A team of 4 comprising of Dr Jayant V Iyer, Dr Raghuraj Hegde, Dr SiehYean Kiew and Mr Avinash Jayaraman made the trip down from Singapore and Bangalore to Sambalpur. The highlight of this trip was a large CME conducted in Bhbaneswar in Hotel New Marrion.

Purpose: Free Cataract Surgeries, Continuing Medical Education, Glaucoma, Augment Diabetic Retinopathy program, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Run clinics, Follow up on basic ophthalmic laser procedures

Summary: There were 2 mission trips conducted as a part of Project Netra 2016. The first trip was in November - A team of 3 comprising of Dr Grace Chew, Dr Ng Wei Yan and Dr Helen Mi Fang made the trip down from Singapore to Sambalpur. The second trip was in December and a team of 4 comprising of Dr Adj Assoc Prof Shamira Perera, Prof Dan Milea, Mr Vinay Kulkarni and Mr Avinash Jayaraman made the trip to Sambalpur.

Mass Cataract Surgery Camp in Sri Lanka (May-June 2016): Vavuniya, SRI LANKA

Project Dates: 31 May - 04 June 2016

The Vision Mission team was in Sri Lanka, working in collaboration with the Vision2020, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka to help bring eye care to the poorest sections of Sri Lanka. As a part of our surgical mission trip TVM sent a team of surgeons to Vavuniya town in the northern province of Sri Lanka to perform cataract surgeries. Sri Lanka has an acute shortage of Ophthalmologists and TVM was approached to help in performing cataract surgeries among the poor patients who cannot afford to pay for the surgeries.

Opening New Fronts: TVM in Bihar, India (Mar 2016): Patna, Bihar, INDIA

Project Dates: March-2016

The Vision Mission team was in Patna, Bihar in March, working with Sri Sai Lions Netralaya. SSLN serves a catchment area of 5 districts in Bihar state, organizing free eye camps for those in need. TVM's Dr Arun Narayaraswamy and founder Mr Avinash Jayaraman were there to visit the various SSLN facilities in Patna. SSLN and TVM are in the midst of working out a partnership wherein TVM would bring in expertise, funds and volunteers to Bihar.

TVM in Myanmar (Feb 2016): Mandalay, MYANMAR

Project Dates: February-2016

The Vision Mission co-founder Dr Jayant V Iyer was in Mandalay, Myanmar along with a Singhealth delegation. He visited Mandalay Eye Hospital and Sagaing Hills Monastery. Kayin Chaung is a village 2.5 hours from Yangon. The Singapore government helped develop a hospital here. A Singhealth delegation goes there every year to help review patients and organize approproate treatment. Ever since last year, The Vision Mission has been participating in this effort. We work together with doctors from the Yangon Eye hospital in screening patients and follow ups.

PROJECT NETRA 2015 (DEC). ODISHA, INDIA

Project Dates: 6-Dec-2015 to 10-Dec-2015

Purpose: Free Cataract Surgeries, Continuing Medical Education, Augment Diabetic Retinopathy program, Run clinics, Follow up on basic ophthalmic laser procedures

Summary: Our third and final trip for 2015 in Odisha happened in December. We have had yet another successful trip and year, with a cumulative total of 1000 free surgeries. A team of 5 comprising of Dr Raghuraj Hegde, Dr Yap Zhu Li, Dr Ng Si Rui, Mr TL Chandran and Mr Avinash Jayaraman made the trip down to Sambalpur. Mr Chandran was our patron and chief sponsor for the trip, and also joined un on location to help in various ways.

Purpose: Free Cataract Surgeries, Surgical Process Optimization, Laser Training, Clinics, Oculoplastics, Inaugural TN-TVM CME Program, Optometry training

Summary: Following from our successful work in the year 2014, we conducted 2 camps in Sambalpur and performed 350 free cataract surgeries. Our team consisted of Dr Jayant Venkatramani Iyer (Singapore), Dr Annabel Chew (Singapore), Dr Raghuraj Hegde (Bangalore, India), Mr Mohd Farook (Singapore) and Mr Edric Wong (Singapore). In addition our donor, Ms Anjali Iyer (Singapore), through whose generosity this trip was funded, joined us for 3 of the 5 days that the volunteers spent at TN.

LifeLine Express China (July 2015): Yangjiang, CHINA

Project Dates:July-2015

The Vision Mission co-founder Dr Jayant V Iyer was invited to be part of a group of volunteer consultants by Lifeline Express China in efforts to help improve eye care services in suburban and rural China. Jayant visited Yangjiang city Eye Hospital as part of these efforts and may be involved in helping set up a diabetic screening program in China in collaboration with Lifeline Express China.

PROJECT NETRA 1000 (DEC). ODISHA, INDIA

Project Dates:14-Dec-2014 to 20-Dec-2014

Purpose: Conduct 350 more free cataract surgeries, Glaucoma Training, Surgical Process Optimization, Tele-Ophthalmology Setup, Various other Trainings and General Ophthalmic Assistance.

Summary: Concluding our successful work for the year 2014, we conducted 2 camps in Sambalpur and performed 350 free cataract surgeries. A team of 3 comprising of Adj Assoc Prof Shamira Perera, Dr Arun Kumar Narayanaswamy and Dr Rupesh Agrawal made the trip down from Singapore.

Project Netra: Sambalpur, Odisha, INDIA

Project Dates: 8-Feb-2014 to 15-Feb-2014

Purpose: Conduct Cataract Surgeries, Set up regular Free Vision Clinics, Set up subspecialty service (glaucoma, retina).

Summary: Support Dr Shivaprasad Sahoo, Director of Trilochan Nethralaya in performing 150 cataract surgeries and reviewing 500 patients in the free outpatient clinical setup for the 1 week.

Tele-Medicine System for Sambalpur

Project Dates:March to May 2014

To setup mechanisms using the state of the art in tele-medicine facilities, such that international experts will be able to assist the doctors and institutes in Odisha through remote means. If this succeeds, then regular assistance can be provided, if necessary, on a weekly basis.
